Dead Men Walking. Ephesians 2:1-5
Zombie movies are science fiction, but did you know that there are spiritually dead men and women roaming the earth? They appear to be normal, yet their spirit is dead on the inside. To be sure, everyone starts out as a spiritual “zombie.”
Human beings are made up of three parts: a body through which they interact with the environment, a soul through which they relate to themselves and others, and a spirit through which they can communicate with God. If a person’s spirit is dead in “trespasses and sins,” he may still live a successful earthly life, but he will be unable to connect with God or make himself acceptable in the Lord’s sight. In this sense, the dead can’t do anything.
It’s easy to envision this being true of someone who has completely surrendered to debasing iniquity. Unfortunately, many moral churchgoers are spiritually dead even though they are externally devout. The good news is that no one has to remain dead. God, in His mercy, makes anybody who repents of sin and trusts in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and redemption alive with Christ.
And the transformation is lasting. “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word and trusts Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life,” Jesus declares in John 5:24.
